Band(Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch and New Kids on the Block)

Wahlberg first gained fame for being the younger brother of Donnie Wahlberg who started the boy band, New Kids on the Block. When he was 13 years old, he was one of the first members of the band before quitting a few months later.

In the 1990s, Wahlberg gained fame for being involved with the hip-hop group, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. Further, he started recording with the band, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch which had dancers and rappers including Anthony Thomas (Ashley Ace), Scott Ross (Scottie Gee), Hector Barros (Hector the Booty Inspector), and Terry Yancey (DJ-T). They hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with the song, “Good Vibrations” which came from Music for the People, their debut album. Solo music career

Wahlberg relocated to Hamburg where he tried to resurrect his music career while working as a producer for East West Records. Later, he worked with Prince Ital Joe, a reggae/ragga singer, on the Life in the Streets album. In 1995, he published “No Mercy” with the support of Dariusz Michalczewski. Wahlberg worked with Prince Ital Joe again in a 1995 album for Ultraphonic Records titled The Remix Album. The album hit in Germany and he started organizing a musical act entitled One Love, within which he worked as a producer and lead singer.

Wahlberg started producing his third album which featured “That’s the Way I Like It.” In 1996, he moved back back to Hamburg to record “Hey DJ” with producer Toni Cottura. In June 1986, Wahlberg and his three friends pursued three black children while throwing rocks at them and exclaiming racial slurs(“Kill the nigger, kill the nigger” ). The following day, he and another group pursued mainly black fourth graders, including a victim he had harassed the previous day, yelled racial tags, threw rocks at them, and encouraged other white males to join in the harassment. In August of that year, a civil action was filed against him and his other friends for infringing the civil rights of his victims. Also, they received a civil rights injunction as a caution that they would be arrested if they did another hate crime.

In April 1988, Wahlberg committed another racist assault at the age of 16. He called a middle-aged Vietnamese-American man in the streets of Dorchester a“Vietnam fucking shit” and knocked him senseless with a big wooden stick. That same day, he assaulted Johnny Trinh, another Vietnamese-American, by punching him in the eye. After his arrest, he was taken to the first scene of the assault and identified the person he had hit saying “…that’s the mother-fucker whose head I split open…” Wahlberg later explained that he had used PCP( a street drug known as angel dust) at the time. Investigators also noted that Wahlberg used uninvited ethnic slurs like “gooks” and “slant-eyed gooks.”

At first, Wahlberg was apprehended for attempted murder. Later, he received two assault counts, battery with a destructive weapon, a count of marijuana possession, and criminal neglect for disobeying the 1986 civil rights injunction. He pleaded guilty to felony assault and received a three-month sentence in jail. However, he only served 45 days of the sentence. Wahlberg thought he had made Trinh permanently blind in one eye after his attack. However, Trinh revealed that he had lost his eye when he served during the Vietnam War.

Wahlberg and Derek McCall fractured Robert Crehan’s, Wahlberg’s neighbor, jaw in August 1992. According to court documents, Wahlberg continually delivered brutal kicks to Robert’s face without provocation while McCall held him down. Wahlberg’s attorney claimed that they were provoked to hit Robert after he called McCall, a black man, a racial slur. They settled the case and avoided a criminal lawsuit.

In 2006, Wahlberg said that meeting and repaying Trinh was the right thing for him to do. In 2014, he appealed for a pardon from the State of Massachusetts for his sentence. His appeal caused controversy and one person whom he had previously attacked opposed the appeal.  Judith Beals, one of the prosecutors, said that he had never admitted the racism in his crimes. Also, she said that pardoning him would preach the wrong message.

In 2016, Wahlberg said that he had apologized to Trinh when he was asking for a pardon for the sentence he received for assaulting him. Trinh later issued a public account stating that he had forgiven Wahlberg. Wahlberg said that he was sorry for trying it get a pardon. The appeal was adjourned after he didn’t answer whether or not he wanted the pardon to remain open.

Wahlberg said that he regretted the attacks and had paid for his mistakes. Also, he said asking for forgiveness and doing the right thing made his guilt go away and thus he has no problem sleeping at night.
