Scope and Contents
The Albert Cullum Collection was donated by his friend and colleague David A. Almeida in April 2017. The small collection is arranged into six series. The documents have been organized with the researcher in mind. Within each series, documents are arranged alphabetically. The largest series in the collection is publications, which include most of Albert Cullum’s published works. For more information about Albert Cullum’s teaching, researchers may also consult the Stonehill College Archives which include correspondence from Cullum, photographs, and news clippings.

Biographical / Historical
Albert Cullum was born on November 22, 1921, Albert Francis Colombatto. He received a BS in education in 1943 from Southern Connecticut State College. After service in the Armed Services he pursued a career in acting in New York City before turning to teaching. It was during this time that he changed his name to Albert Cullum. Cullum taught at St. Luke’s School in New York City from 1948-1955. In 1955 he was appointed the Language Arts Director of the Rye New York Public School System. He received his MA in Counseling from Columbia Teacher’s College in 1949.
In 1966, Cullum joined Boston University teaching assistant while pursuing his doctoral degree. In 1971, he left to teach at the Herbert H. Leham Collection in New York until 1973 when he became a full-time faculty member in Stonehill College’s education department. Cullum would teach at Stonehill until his death in 2003. A nationally recognized educator known for his innovative approach to education and bringing theater to the classroom, his writings included Push Back the Desks, Shake Hands with Shakespeare, and The Geranium on the Windowsill Just Died, But Teacher You Went Right On.” Devoted to his students Cullum never married or had children.
